COMMUNITY CHRISTIAN ACADEMY CHAPTER OF NHS GUIDELINES

Note:  CCA can apply Christian values into the four pillars of NHS because we have the privilege of attending a Christian school.  Along with the pillars, we also look for Christ-like qualities.  We can also intertwine the Christian values into the four pillars.  The essay part of the Student Activity Information Form includes several thought provoking Christian questions.  NHS does not include any Christian values in the national handbook, because of its partnership with several public schools, but private schools are also affiliated with this organization.  As included in the NHS National Guidelines, “Membership is an honor bestowed upon an individual, and thus a privilege. It is neither a position for which one applies nor to which one is elected nor a right of any individual.”

SCHOLARSHIP

·       Students with cumulative GPA’s of 3.5 or higher are invited to fill out the Student Activity Information Form.

·       Students must maintain this GPA during their time in NHS.

LEADERSHIP

·       See national guidelines.

·       The Faculty Council recognizes young high school aged students are not given many opportunities to serve as president, captain, officer, etc.  The Faculty Council recognizes the following as leadership acts in addition to the national guidelines.

o   Participating in class

o   Turning assignments in on time

o   Paying attention in class

o   Following school rules such as dress code

SERVICE

·       See national guidelines

·       Volunteer positions at church are accepted in this portion

CHARACTER

·       See national guidelines

·       The Faculty Council notes positive and negative aspects of each candidate.  They also reflect on the Christian attitude and manner of each candidate.  The candidate should also display the six pillars of character.

THE RECOMMENDED SELECTION PROCESS

·       See national guidelines

·       In addition to national guidelines

o   The principal has given the right to the chapter adviser to select the Faculty Council.

o   The council is not always the same group of people.

o   The council is made of faculty who had the students in class most recent.

o   The Faculty Evaluation Form is attached.  The teachers were allowed to make comments, however, from experience, the more direct the question is, the better the answer will be.  This year teachers were asked if they felt the candidate would be an asset to our chapter.  The teachers also had the option to put N/A next to the student’s name.  This was an option for those teachers who have not had the students in several years or never at all.  The chapter adviser then tallied the votes and made a guide that was percentage based.  This was an action that only assisted the Faculty Council and had no accreditation as a vote.  *Note*  The percentages were extremely accurate and in line with the Faculty Council’s vote.

o   Students were notified by the chapter adviser.

o   Induction ceremony was held the following week.

12.02 NHS GUIDELINES FOR SELECTION OF MEMBERS

The Faculty Council selects students who demonstrate outstanding performance in all four categories of the National Honor Society:  scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

THE RECOMMENDED SELECTION PROCESS

·       The Faculty Council should be selected by the principal.

·       The cumulative GPA is evaluated first to determine the students that re scholastically eligible for membership.

·       The students must fill out the Student Activity Information Form and must be turned in by a specific date and time.

·       All faculty members are given the chance to make comments on the candidates on a Faculty Evaluation Form; however, the selection of members is not made by these evaluations, it is strictly additional information about the candidate.  The decisions re only made by the Faculty Council.

·       All information on the Faculty Evaluation Form should remain confidential and only discussed in the Faculty Council meeting.

·       Faculty Council should make their decisions with references to the Student Activity Information Form and the four pillars of NHS.

·       Selection for membership to the chapter is always to be by a majority vote of the Faculty Council.

·       The guidelines say, “Membership is an honor bestowed upon an individual, and thus a privilege.  It is neither a position for which one applies nor to which one is elected nor a right of any individual.”

·       Essay sections re allowed in the local selection procedure to further help the Faculty Council.

·       Students should be notified promptly by the principal, chapter adviser, president, or by printed letters.
